Care Guide
Studio SLAY pieces are designed for considered wear - reached for intentionally, put on with care, and stored properly after. This guide covers how to keep each piece looking its best.
Beaded Jewellery Care
Each Studio SLAY piece is handwoven from Japanese Miyuki Delica glass beads - precision cylinder beads measuring less than 2mm, placed one by one under consistent thread tension. That process is what gives the work its clean, flush finish. It also means the beads respond directly to how they are handled.
Keep away from water and moisture
This is the most important rule. Water weakens the thread over time, and moisture trapped between beads accelerates tarnishing on the metal findings. Remove your pieces before washing your hands, showering, swimming, or any activity that causes perspiration. Singapore's humidity is a factor even when you are not near water; storing pieces correctly matters.
Avoid impact
The beads are made of glass. A sharp knock against a hard surface - a countertop, a door frame, the clasp of a bag - can crack or chip individual beads. Be especially mindful when dressing and undressing.
Keep away from chemicals
Perfume, hairspray, sunscreen, lotion, and cleaning products degrade both the thread and the bead surface over time. Apply everything first. Put your jewellery on last.
Clean gently
If dirt or oils collect between beads, use a soft dry brush to clear the grooves. A clean, unused makeup brush works well. For metal components, a non-alcohol, lotion-free wet wipe applied lightly and dried immediately with a soft cloth is sufficient. Do not use jewellery cleaning solutions, ultrasonic cleaners, or polishing cloths on beaded pieces.
Store with intention
Keep each piece in its original pouch or box, away from other jewellery. Hard surfaces and metal-on-metal contact will scratch findings and stress the beadwork over time. Do not pile pieces together.
Metal Hardware Care
Studio SLAY pieces use two types of metal findings: gold/rhodium plated brass and PVD-plated stainless steel. All metals used are hypoallergenic, lead-free and nickel-free and suitable for sensitive skin.
Gold/rhodium plated brass carries a layer of gold or rhodium over a brass base. Rhodium is a very durable metal and adds a degree of tarnish resistance, but both gold and rhodium plating can wear down over time at points of friction and exposure. How quickly depends almost entirely on how it is cared for.
PVD-plated stainless steel is more durable. The physical vapour deposition process bonds the gold finish at a deeper level, making it more resistant to wear and oxidation. While stainless steel is often marketed as 'tarnish-proof', it is still a surface finish, not solid gold, and the same care principles apply.
For both:
- Keep dry. Moisture is the primary cause of tarnishing and premature wear. Pat dry immediately if contact with moisture occurs.
- Avoid friction. Clasps, jump rings, and connector findings are the first points to show wear. Where possible, avoid layering pieces in ways that cause metal-on-metal contact.
- Wipe down after wearing. A soft microfibre cloth removes sweat, skin oils and residue before they build up.
- Never use abrasive cloths, chemical dips, or silver polishing solutions. These wear down and sometimes remove the plating.
Care by Jewellery Type
Different pieces sit differently on the body and face different conditions during wear.
Earrings
Earrings have the least skin contact and surface friction, which means they tend to hold their finish longest. The main risks are perfume, cosmetics and hairspray (always apply these before putting earrings on) and surface damage from improper storage. Handle earrings by the post or hoop, not the beadwork. Take care not to force or bend the post, and for drop and dangle styles, always hold the finding when putting on and removing, never pull by the beaded element.
We use silicone earring backs to protect the beadwork from scratching and impact. Do not replace these with metal backs. If you need extras, just get in touch.
Necklaces
Necklaces require attention to both the metal components and the beadwork, which face different conditions during wear.
The clasp is the most vulnerable metal component. The back of the neck accumulates perspiration, so the clasp area is prone to tarnishing faster than the rest of the chain. Wipe the full length of the chain and the clasp after each wear.
For necklaces with a beaded section, the junction where beadwork meets the chain is the most structurally sensitive point. Always hold the chain when fastening, adjusting, or removing the necklace. Do not pull or tug at the beaded portion, as this stresses the connection points.
If the beaded element sits against the chest during wear, be mindful of fabric contact. Textured materials such as knits, lace, or rough weaves can catch on the beadwork. This is worth considering when styling occasion wear.
When stacking necklaces, keep the beaded portion away from other metal or hard jewellery. Contact between pieces can scratch or chip the beads.
Bangles
Studio SLAY bangles are PVD-plated stainless steel and the most structurally resilient pieces in the range. That said, the beadwork is still glass, and bangles make contact with surfaces constantly during wear - desks, steering wheels, door handles and more. A single sharp knock can crack or displace a bead, and because the beadwork wraps almost the full band, every surface is vulnerable. Remove bangles before any manual activity: cooking, cleaning, exercise, or anything involving grip, impact, or pressure. Fasten and remove using the clasp where applicable, do not pull or force the band open.
Rings
Rings are the piece type that requires the most care and the most deliberate decisions about when to wear them.
Remove your ring before: washing your hands, applying hand cream or sanitiser, cooking, cleaning, any activity involving water or chemicals, and any task that involves gripping, pressure, or impact. Rings catch on surfaces in ways that earrings or necklaces do not. A single snag can displace or crack a bead, and because the beads wrap the entire band, there is no part of the ring that is impact-proof.
This is not a piece to put on in the morning and forget about. It is one to reach for intentionally, for occasions where it will be noticed and looked after.
Store flat in its pouch, not in a pile with other rings or jewellery.
Storage
Store all pieces in the box and pouch provided. Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight; UV exposure affects both bead colour and plating over time. A closed drawer or jewellery box is preferable to a display stand in a humid or sunlit room.
